Green Healthy Neighborhoods Plan
Chicago, IL

This land use plan envisions putting vacant property in Chicago back to productive use, including the conversion of derelict property to urban agriculture, new housing, and neighborhood parks on properties within Chicago’s South Side.

One of the greatest strengths of the City of Chicago is the diversity and vibrancy of its neighborhoods. Like many cities in the Midwest, however, there are neighborhoods faced with multiple challenges, including a depressed housing market, lack of employment opportunities, vacancy and blight, and many years of population decline.

The City of Chicago and its partners are engaged in a project to create land use plans that will guide future investments in challenged neighborhoods on the City’s South Side. Englewood, Woodlawn, and Washington Park make up the priority areas of the project. This land use plan focuses on putting vacant and derelict property back to productive use, including the development of urban agriculture, new housing, and neighborhood parks.

Role
Local Form Studio’s Christopher Riale generated urban design, urban agriculture, and sustainability design concepts for 10 key sites in South Side neighborhood visualized primarily as 3D renderings to showcase site potential and garner community support for the Plan.
