New London Intermodal Transit Center & TOD Plan
New London, CT
This plan provides guidance for transforming New London Union Station into a modern intermodal transit center that seamlessly ties together rail, bus, and ferry transportation modes, and identifies opportunities for redevelopment potential within a quarter-mile of the intermodal facility.
New London is one of the only New England cities to have rail, bus, and ferry facilities converging at one central point within the core of a historic commercial district. New London’s beautiful and underutilized Union Station, a rail station designed by H.H. Richardson, is the crown jewel of the historic downtown and a focal point of the transportation hub. The key challenge was developing a plan that better ties these modes together in a geographically constrained and historic downtown setting.
Role
Local Form Studio’s Christopher Riale served as urban designer and assisted in the evaluation of existing operational deficiencies, developed a re-use plan for Union Station, and recommended interim and long-term redevelopment and wayfinding solutions that provide seamless and safe passenger connections between transportation modes.
