Brooklyn-Queens Connector (BQX) Feasibility Study
Brooklyn & Queens, NY
The BQX will provide improved transit service to existing underserved Brooklyn and Queens residents and businesses.
New York City has one of the most extensive transit systems in the world, and its subways provide a vast transit network that serves dense urban corridors. Reflecting Manhattan’s historic role as the center of economic activity and employment, the transit system provides tremendous capacity to carry riders into and out of Manhattan from Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, but does not provide fast or convenient transit access between the outer Boroughs, most notably between the directly bordering boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.
Working with the NYC Economic Development Corporation and the NYC Department of Transportation, the Brooklyn-Queens Connector (BQX) Feasibility Study examined a 16-mile corridor stretching from Astoria, Queens to Sunset Park, Brooklyn to identify a feasible and preferred north-south transit connection that will allow for the sustainable growth of the Brooklyn-Queens waterfront, and to provide improved transit service to existing underserved residents and businesses.
Role
Local Form Studio’s Christopher Riale served as lead urban designer as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure the BQX is well-integrated into the urban fabric of the East River waterfront and well-positioned to catalyze economic development.
